Purpose

To grant permanent residents the full rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship, including the right to vote and obtain a Canadian passport.

Eligibility Criteria

Permanent Resident Status

Must be a permanent resident of Canada and not under review for immigration fraud or a removal order.

Physical Presence

Must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 1,095 days (3 years) out of the last 5 years before applying.

Income Tax Filing

Must have filed taxes for at least 3 years within the 5 year period, if required under the Income Tax Act.

Language Proficiency

Applicants aged 18-54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French.

Knowledge Test

Applicants aged 18-54 must pass a test on the rights, responsibilities, and knowledge of Canada.

Download and fill out the citizenship application package from the IRCC website, including form CIT 0002.

Pay the processing fee online and include the receipt with your application.

The application will go through an initial review, background checks, and potentially an interview or citizenship test.
