Why is a Medical Exam Required?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires medical examinations to protect public health and safety and to avoid excessive demand on health or social services.
Who Needs a Medical Exam?
- Permanent residence applicants
- Temporary residents planning to work in certain occupations
- Visitors staying more than six months from certain countries
What Does the Exam Include?
The examination typically involves:
- Physical examination
- Medical history review
- Chest X-ray (for applicants 11 years and older)
- Blood tests (if indicated)
- Urinalysis (if indicated)
Where to Get the Exam
Medical examinations must be conducted by IRCC-approved Panel Physicians. You can find a list on the IRCC website.
Results and Processing
Results are typically valid for 12 months. The physician uploads results directly to IRCC, and you'll receive confirmation.
What if You Have a Medical Condition?
Having a medical condition doesn't automatically disqualify you. IRCC will assess whether your condition might:
- Be a danger to public health or safety
- Cause excessive demand on health or social services
