What are Biometrics?
Biometrics refers to fingerprints and a digital photo. IRCC uses biometrics to verify identity and conduct background checks.
Who Needs to Give Biometrics?
Most foreign nationals applying for:
- Visitor visa
- Work permit
- Study permit
- Permanent residence
- Refugee or asylum status
Exemptions
You may not need to give biometrics if you are:
- Under 14 years old
- Over 79 years old
- A Canadian citizen
- A diplomat or head of state
The Biometrics Process
- Submit your application
- Receive Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL)
- Book an appointment at a collection point
- Attend your appointment (bring BIL and passport)
- Provide fingerprints and photo
Where to Give Biometrics
Biometrics can be provided at:
- Visa Application Centres (VACs)
- Service Canada locations (for applicants in Canada)
- U.S. Application Support Centers (for applicants in the US)
Validity and Fees
Biometrics are valid for 10 years. The fee is CAD $85 per person or CAD $170 for families.
